Quick Take
The Backspin Tee transforms traditional batting practice by presenting the ball at an angle, simulating a pitch and exposing the optimal contact zone. Used by nearly all MLB teams and many colleges, it helps players improve swing precision and produce ideal launch angles with ease.
The backspin tee is a hitting device that hangs a baseball over the plate to reveal the part of the baseball that should be hit. The pro model also puts the ball at an angle like it would if it were being pitched. These are advantages over traditional tees which hold the ball over the plate and at least partially cover the part of the ball that should be struck.

Contact with the bottom of the ball and the right swing path creates optimally struck balls. This is why the Backspin tee has won awards, gets great reviews, and is found at many MLB and College practice fields.

Does the Backspin Tee Really Work?
The question “does the backspin tee really work?” might misunderstand the point. You can hit a ball off a traditional tee at similar angles and spin. The point of the backspin tee is to present the ball more like a real pitch, requiring a successful swing plane. It suspends the ball at a pitched angle and exposes the correct contact point. A traditional tee sets a flat pitch and holds the ball at the point of desired contact.
In that sense, the Backspin Tee works perfectly. It’s a revolutionary improvement on a product few thought could be changed.
Q&A With Backspin Tee
We exchanged emails with the folks at Backspin. Here are our questions and their candid answers.
Why Does This Work?
An upside-down tee helps because it doesn’t block the bottom half of the ball. On a normal tee, hitting the top half means hitting the rubber cone, often resulting in ground balls and poor feedback. On the Backspin Tee, hitting the top half of the ball also means hitting the rubber cone, giving immediate negative feedback. Hitting the bottom half (the desired contact point) avoids the cone entirely, offering positive feedback.
Also, traditional tees wear out faster since hitting the bottom half eventually damages the cone. Our lifetime warranty ensures that’s never an issue with the Backspin Tee.
How Does the Ball Stick in the Tee?
The ball fits into the cone with surface tension. Just twist it into place. There’s no need to jam it upward. The design is simple and effective.
Baseball or Softball?
We use different-sized cones for baseball and softball, and they are easy to swap out.
Backspin Tee Focus
The Backspin Tee aims to produce an on-plane swing that contacts the correct part of the ball. Hitting the bottom half of the ball with a good swing plane creates a line drive launch angle with proper backspin. Backspin is a result of where you hit the ball, not something you can add at will.
Do Traditional Tees Produce More Topspin?
No. But a traditional tee often exposes the part of the ball you shouldn’t hit, which can confuse hitters and lead to unwanted results.
