Quick Take
The C-Flap face guard is a game-changing addition to baseball helmets, providing jaw and facial protection for hitters. Popular among MLB players, it enhances confidence at the plate while maintaining visibility and comfort. Affordable and effective, it's a valuable safety tool for players of all levels.
If you’ve watched MLB games this season, you’ve likely seen a new piece of face guard protection on player helmets. Guys like Mike Trout and Bryce Harper wear a baseball helmet face guard. It seems like at least half of all hitters are using them.

There are roughly three main options on the market today:
- Markwort C-Flap
- Rawlings Mach EXT
- Boombah Jaw Guard
- Easton (coming soon)
- EvoShield (coming soon)
More jaw guards are on the way. Some Little League organizations have noted that modifying a helmet with a C-Flap can remove its NOCSAE certification. USA Today pointed out the irony—safety gear isn’t considered “safe” due to certification technicalities.
Some argue MLB or college hitters need more protection due to facing 95+ mph pitches. True, but these hitters also have better reaction times and face pitchers farther away. (Check out our conversation on youth pitcher head protection.)

Legal Note
Drilling holes to attach a Markwort C-Flap may remove the helmet’s warranty and NOCSAE certification. Some claim this makes it illegal in Little League. Ironically, MLB players use this exact flap on their helmets, but for youth players it may be against the rules.
Boombah’s face guard avoids this issue by using the helmet’s pre-drilled holes. Other companies are working on certified youth versions, but as of now, only Boombah offers such a solution.

Do Younger Players Need Face Protection?
Young players may not see major-league velocity, but a fear of the ball can hinder progress. Adding protective gear like a C-Flap can boost confidence at minimal cost and hassle. (Boombah also makes one specifically for their helmets.)
Does the C-Flap Fit on My Helmet?
Boombah’s guard works best on Boombah helmets. Markwort’s C-Flap claims to fit most helmets (Rawlings, Schutt, DeMarini, Slugger, etc.). We’ve even found Boombah’s Face Guard can fit some DeMarini helmets with the provided screws.
What is a Markwort C-Flap?

The Markwort C-Flap is a padded plastic piece that attaches to one side of the helmet (the side facing the pitcher). You need a right or left-handed model depending on the batter’s stance.
The C-Flap:
- Is lightweight Lexan plastic
- Attaches below the ear hole
- Hangs over the jaw for protection
While it can’t prevent all injuries, it should significantly reduce facial injury risk and also protect the eye area without blocking vision.
Player Testing

Our player used it in multiple practices and games with no complaints. It didn’t obstruct vision and may have boosted confidence. Teammates thought it looked cool. At around $20, it’s a small investment for better peace of mind. Different colors are available; we chose clear to match a unique helmet color.
Installation
Installing the C-Flap takes about five minutes. The kit includes a template for drilling three holes (7/16″), and you may need to peel back the helmet liner. Once the holes are drilled, attach the screws and reattach the liner. All necessary hardware is included.
Is It Worth It?
Yes, the C-Flap is worth it. It boosts safety, confidence, and peace of mind. Many pros wear it, and it can help any hitter feel more secure at the plate.
