Easton’s Jaw Guard: Safety Meets Functionality

Quick Take

The Easton Jaw Guard offers enhanced protection for hitters, seamlessly integrating with Easton helmets and meeting certification standards. Praised for its design and visibility, it provides players with added confidence and safety without obstructing their vision or comfort.

Easton’s Jaw Guard gained popularity during the LLWS when it likely saved a player from a serious dental injury. We recorded the viral video and posted it on our Facebook page. The Easton Jaw Guard was new for the series and became available in September 2018. Some are available here: 2019 Easton helmets and the Z5 line.

C-Flap vs Jaw Guard

The C-Flap is a brand name of the Markwort Jaw Guard. Markwort’s product has been around the longest but is sold separately from helmets. To attach it, you usually drill holes, which can lead to questions about helmet legality. This is the same flap most MLB players use.

Easton’s version is the Extended Jaw Guard. C-Flap is trademarked by Markwort, but Easton’s product serves the same purpose. Easton’s jaw guard is certified for use on THEIR helmets, making it league-legal where strict rules apply.

Other “legal” helmet/jaw guard combos include the Rawlings MACH EXT and Boombah Face Guard. These guards are meant for their specific helmets. While they can fit other helmets, that may not be strictly legal. We’ve done it, but proceed at your own risk.

EvoShield is expected to release a jaw guard soon.

We discuss more options in our Jaw Guard Article.

Easton Jaw Guard Recommendations

We’ve seen all the jaw guards available today. There isn’t a huge difference between them. Markwort’s C-Flap is flexible but may not be league-legal if you have to drill. The Rawlings and Boombah flaps are designed for their helmets, and Easton’s fits Easton helmets.

When in doubt, use the guard made for your helmet. If you have an Easton helmet, the Easton jaw guard is the straightforward choice.

Should I Use a Jaw Guard?

Yes, why not? It doesn’t restrict vision if installed correctly. We look forward to the day when leagues mandate them. Consider if the LLWS incident had gone differently—jaw guards help prevent injuries and controversy. Protecting players is always worth it.
